The program is designed to encourage continuous learning and foster a love for reading during the summer months. Each student is assigned a set of books based on their upcoming grade level, ensuring that the reading material is both engaging and educational.
The goal is to keep students mentally active, help them improve literacy skills, and prepare them for the academic year ahead. Along with reading, students are often asked to complete activities or assignments related to books to enhance comprehension and critical thinking. Summer Reading at MLK Middle School is an important part of the school's commitment to academic excellence and student success.
English Department Summer Reading Statement
Summer reading serves a number of purposes. First, summer reading is diagnostic. It provides teachers with a means of assessing students’ critical thinking, reading comprehension, writing, and communication skills.
Next, summer reading is academic. It keeps students academically engaged over the summer, and it sets a tone for the level of rigor students should expect in any English class in the coming year.
Last, and perhaps most important, summer reading is communal. It provides students with a vehicle for cultural literacy, choice, personal growth, and independence of thought. This will be the student’s first opportunity to showcase their ability, quality, and effort to teachers, so please do not overlook summer reading.
There are no exceptions as Summer Reading is a requirement for all students. Below are the grade level lists and requirements for completion of Summer Reading.
